Ford Gives Details on Green Initiatives in Sustainability Report
by Editorial Staff

DEARBORN, Mich., June 18, 2010 -- Earlier this week, Ford released its 11th annual 2009/2010 Sustainability Report outlining measures the company is taking to decrease its environmental impact in five areas: climate change, fuel economy, mobility, vehicle safety and human rights.

“Creating a strong business and building a better world are not conflicting goals -- they are essential ingredients for long-term success,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. “Ford’s Blueprint for Sustainability and our commitment to pursuing it have not changed. Our vision is to provide sustainable transportation that is affordable in every sense of the word – socially, environmentally and economically.”

The report, titled “Blueprint for Sustainability: The Future at Work,” describes Ford’s 2009 and 2010 efforts to reduce its impact on the environment, which include:

- In 2009, Ford cut its water use by more than 16 percent.

- Compared to a 2006 baseline, Ford reduced carbon dioxide emissions of its North American 2009 model year vehicles by 12 percent and is on track to meet its goal of a 30 percent CO2 reduction by 2020

- Ford is one of the first companies to join the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Water Disclosure program to help conserve water.

- In 2006, Ford pledged to double the number of flexible-fuel vehicles it produced in the U.S. By the end of 2010, Ford says it will deliver on that promise.

- Ford has increased the availability of EcoBoost™ engine technology, which delivers up to 20 percent better fuel economy compared to larger-displacement engines. In China and Europe, Ford introduced a new four-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

- Five all-new electric vehicles will be unveiled in North America and Europe by 2013, including two battery-electric and two hybrid vehicles as well as a plug-in hybrid.

- Through a partnership with Coulomb Technologies, Ford will provide in-home ChargePoint® Networked Charging Stations for customers who buy one of Ford’s first all-electric vehicles.

- Lincoln expects that the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, the company’s fifth hybrid offering, will be the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in North America.
